Experience the Authentic Traditional Coconut Oil Making Workshop at Bunga Jabe
Looking for an authentic, hands-on cultural experience during your tropical island getaway? Beyond the crystal-clear waters and pristine beaches of Karimunjawa, there is a rich local heritage waiting to be explored.
At Bunga Jabe, we invite you to step away from the ordinary and immerse yourself in a truly traditional Indonesian craft: our Traditional Coconut Oil Making Workshop.
Whether you are visiting from North America, Europe, Australia, or anywhere else in the world, this interactive eco-tourism experience connects you directly with nature and local traditions. It is the perfect half-day activity for families, solo adventurers, and cultural travelers who want to do more than just sightsee.
What is the Bunga Jabe Coconut Oil Workshop?
Our workshop is a fully guided, interactive session where you learn how pure, natural coconut oil is made using time-honored traditional methods.
Instead of just watching, you get to do the work. Guided by our experienced local hosts, you will experience the entire journey of a coconut—from a freshly plucked fruit to a bottle of rich, golden oil.
The Step-by-Step Experience: From Coconut to Oil
Step 1: Husking and Peeling the Coconut (Mengupas)
Start by learning the traditional technique of husking a whole coconut. You will use local tools to strip away the tough outer fibers and crack open the hard shell to reveal the fresh, white coconut meat inside.
Step 2: Grating and Extracting (Memeras)
Next, you will grate the fresh coconut and press it to extract rich, creamy coconut milk (santan). This physical, hands-on step separates the pure liquid from the natural fibers.
Step 3: Cooking the Milk (Menggoreng)
The final step is the traditional cooking phase over a warm fire. As the heat gently breaks down the coconut milk, the air fills with a sweet, toasted tropical aroma, and the liquid miraculously separates into pure, clear oil and savory curds.
Taste Unique Local Delicacies: Coco Milk (Santan), Blondo, and Tompong
This workshop is a zero-waste process, which means the culinary experience goes far beyond just the oil! During your session, you will get to taste the rich, fresh coco milk straight from the press.
As the cooking process finishes, you will also be treated to traditional byproducts that most tourists never get to try:
Blondo: The savory-sweet, caramelized coconut curds left over after the oil is extracted. It is a highly prized, delicious traditional snack!
Tompong: The aromatic, toasted coconut residue that offers a deep, earthy flavor unique to traditional Indonesian cooking.
Take Home Your Own Pure Coconut Oil
At the end of the session, your freshly pressed, 100% natural coconut oil will be safely bottled for you. Use it as a rich skin moisturizer, a natural hair treatment, or a healthy cooking oil to bring a taste of Karimunjawa back to your home country.
Open to All Karimunjawa Visitors
You do not need to be an overnight guest at Bunga Jabe to join in! Our workshop is open to everyone visiting the island, making it a perfect addition to any Karimunjawa itinerary, as long as our local mentors are available that day. We regularly welcome guests from the USA, France, Netherlands, Poland, Germany, Italy, the UK, Hungary, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Belgium, Singapore, and Norway.
